I recently picked up 3 mascaras, all with different formulas and different prices. YSL Baby Doll, $32, Benefit They're Real $24, and Sephora The Mascara $12. What's interesting when comparing these products is the difference in price does not reflect the quality of the formula; they all have pros and cons.
YSL Baby Doll:
The description claims to be long lasting, separating, lifting, defining, clump free, and flake free. In my experience, this is a very long lasting formula, but can be very clumpy/non-separating. The reason for this is that the product is very sticky, which helps for the longevity, but it makes the lashes stick together. The most impressive part of this mascara is the lifting effect. You definitely do not need a lash curler with this mascara! The brush is plastic with very short bristles that makes the lashes a little thicker (it provides a thicker application of mascara). Because of this, the mascara is a little heavy so the curl might fall a little, but very little. Overall I really like this mascara for special event because it is the most dramatic of these mascaras.
Benefit They're Real:
This mascara claims to lengthen, volumize, lift, and separate. This is definitely the most lengthening of the 3. Because it lengthens and separates so much, it does not add as much volume as the YSL one. I find that this mascara smudges a little under my eyes. I like this mascara, but for me it is nothing really special. It's great to add some definition to your lashes, but it doesn't have a big wow factor like the other two.
Sephora The Mascara:
Surprisingly, the cheapest mascara is my favorite. It claims to add volume, length, and definition. It lengthens, not as much as the benefit one, but adds much more definition than the other two. It separates the lashes while still adding volume. It does not have the best longevity, and smudges under my eyes a bit, but that is what I expected from the least expensive one. The wand on this mascara has synthetic/non-plastic bristles. These are my favorite because they add a softness to the eyelashes that plastic bristles don't. This would be the best mascara if it had better long lasting power and was smudge free.
I am still on the hunt for the best mascara! Hope learning a little about these mascaras helps you on your search!
